_DAY 6 Animals and mankind
When I was a boy, my brothers and I had very few toys to play with. We were at war with Germany. There were shortages of everything. So we made our own toys, paper aeroplane's, kites, cricket bats, fishing rods and much more. It was great fun and taught us that the only enemy of boredom was a lack of imagination and invention. We inherited imagination from God. I have read in science books that the universe all began as an accident, a big bang. If the scientist who wrote that had been a boy in our town when flying bombs exploded on houses and people, he would have seen what destruction big bangs cause.
THE MEANING OF A CAUSE
The cause of something to happen is the origin of it, the creator. In the year 2012 we see many wonders being created. Just imagine the intelligence and imagination required to build an aeroplane that can fly from one part of the world to another, or a space ship, a cathedral, not to mention a digital TV set. These are wonders unthought of when I was a boy. Of course, none of these things would have been possible without intelligence and the materials used to create them.
The materials were put there by God and we inherited the intelligence to create them from him. That is why the ‘Apostles Creed’ says, ‘I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.’ The word Father is used because, as we shall see, Day 6 of God’s creation reveals God’s relationship to what and whom he created. God not only made the animals and man but he made them very good. (Genesis 1:31 NRSV) God configured biological life from the earth we live on, the air we breath, the water we drink , the fire which keeps us warm and the elements and atoms of matter. Not only did he create animals of so many different kinds but he configured each species to be exactly like its own kind.
THE ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES
The origin of the species is God who created them to be what they are, an elephant, a monkey, a giraffe, a lion or a pussy cat. Just think logically about this for a moment. If the mothers of all species were once babies, a baby elephant or a baby monkey, for instance, then there would have been a time when there were no mothers which means all the babies would die very quickly being without their mothers. It is the same for a human being. If all mothers were once babies how would the babies survive. So it is only logical to think that mothers were created first, then from mothers came babies. This is what happened on Day 6.
The wise king Solomon said, ‘The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens, by his knowledge the deeps broke down and the clouds drop down dew. (Proverbs 3:19-20 NRSV) Wisdom means to know what a thing is. By knowing what a thing is you then know what it isn’t. God’s wisdom created animal life to be what it is. There was no natural selection, only God’s creation.
THE FIRST CAUSE
God is the first cause. As you already know, everything has a cause. Nothing is the cause of itself. So there must be a First Cause which is God the Father and creator of everything, who because he is God does not need to be caused, no more than a circle needs a beginning or a triangle needs four sides. God is self existent. There are those clever philosophers who say ‘there may be an infinity of causes, not just one.’ But we live in a real world not in an imaginary one and so we know that there must be a First intelligence, an all wise God who made everything.
THE CREATION OF MAN
God did much more than create biological life in animals and man, he created man in his own image with a soul, mind and spirit. (Genesis 1:26 NRSV) So man, like God is a creator. The evidence of that fact is everywhere to be seen from the Internet to space travel. So what is man’s life? Man’s life, (man meaning both man and woman) is a biological, intellectual and spiritual existence. That is why of all God’s creation man is a ruler over all that God created. (Genesis 1:28 NRSV)
1. Why do you think God is called our Father?
2. What kind of world did God make: @ A reasonable world? (b) A bad world? (c) A perfect world?
3. What is life? @ An accident of atoms? (b) A design of living beings? (c) A creation of God?
